Chemistry and Pharmaceutics Branch



Branch Functions
  1. To administer a national program of research and development in the following areas:

    1. medicinal chemistry focusing on design and synthesis of new chemical candidates with pharmacotherapeutic potential. Applications of molecular modeling, combinational techniques, and natural product approaches are points of special focus.

    2. bioavailability, pharmacokinetics, drug metabolism studies, and studies on the interactions of these compounds with known drugs of abuse, including fetal exposure

  2. To develop and manage resources for bulk chemical preparation and dosage form preparation of medications under development and carried out in compliance with the FDA Good Manufacturing Practice (GMP) regulations

  3. To provide analytical chemistry development and services, including the development of assay methods for applications of drug characterization bioavailability and kinetic studies in the Division. To provide a centralized analysis resource for biological specimens (e.g., urine for cocaine use detection).

  4. To manage the distribution of controlled substances and related compounds, research chemicals, bulk pharmaceuticals, and dosage forms that are used in programs associated with medications development

  5. To provide documentation for the testing of new drug substances and dosage forms for Investigational New Drug applications (INDs) and New Drug Application (NDA) reports for drugs developed in the Division.

  6. To provide consultation and technical support for urine testing of drugs of abuse in clinical trials being conducted for the Division.
