Pain Interest Group

The Pain Interest Group is a focus of the National Institute on Drug Abuse's pain research program. NIDA has a long-lasting commitment to pain research. This interest is largely the result of the physical dependence liability of narcotic analgesics. To reduce 'narcotic dependence' is a mission of the Institute. Also, many abused drugs have either analgesic properties (e.g. opioids, cannabis) or are effective adjunctive agents in potentiating narcotics (amphetamines). Understanding how to better treat pain with less chance of addiction or other ill effects of treatment has become an important goal of NIDA.
